Yeah, I know Wolf von Witting got started in filk back in 1996-97 by finding filk on the net (it's described on page 15 of CounterClock #6).
Sadly, the search interface and options (and the archive?) in Google Groups seems to be badly broken, so my easy search options yielded nothing, but at a guess I'd maybe find Wolf or someone from Forodrim. The other Usenet archives seems to be in even worse shape.
