AKICILJ: IMAP clients

I've spent some time trying to get Thunderbird to behave, but it simply has too many misbehaviours (eg not realising that different folders need to be able to show different columns of information) - and it's not like I lack experience with e-mail programs.

So, what is the best program to use with a Gmail account using IMAP, and any really good tips for making it work?

I'm on a Vista SP1 machine.

When I set different columns or sort orders on a folder, they stick, for me.

Except that they get set for every bloody folder.

I don't need a column for sender in the sent mail folder(s), but I need to show the recipient. I don't need a column for the recipient in the mailboxes for incoming mail, but I need to show the sender. But I can't find any way for Thunderbird to have custom columns for different folders.

Also, Thunderbird refuses to filter mail that has been touched in Gmail (and probably also with another Gmail client). Bloody stupid.

I tend to just use gmail directly, due to strongly disliking most mail programs. If I had to pick one, I'd say Outlook. The real one. Not worth buying if you don't already have it, though.

I have used Outlook. Doesn't care for it one iota.
