As I noted in my previous entry, I thought I had managed to exhaust the field for fan filks, at least for awhile. But then I stumbled onto Första maj (YouTube) again—I knew the song from my youth but had largely forgotten about it.

The original was written by the Swedish socialist Hannes Sköld in 1911 as a celebration of International Worker's Day on May 1, and it goes to the tune of an Icelandic folk song. As protest songs go, this one is very lyrical, romantic and utopian, so it was finished really quickly—main trouble was deciding which fannish event to sing about. I settled on the Eastercon, since I could work it into the lyrics rather easily and fell at roughly the right time.

This also means that I had to do minimal changes to the song. A total of ten words (out of 84) were changed, most of them in the first verse. The second verse is entirely unchanged, and the last verse is only changed in the first line.

Påskkongress, påskkongress
varje sliten fandress
blir en mantel av strålande ljus
varje trött trufan här
glömmer mondänens sfär
och går drucken av vårvindars rus

O du älskogens vår
som befriande går
över landen i segrarefärd
du är drömmens också
och var blick i det blå
är en blick in i undrenas värld

Varje mondänens hot
varje vardag med sot
blir idag som en lumpen legend
Och var håg och vår hand
röres fritt utan band
och vår blick är mot framtiden spänd
