Cthulhu (filk)

Ever since I've discovered Terence Chua's marvelous ABBA-Cthulhu filks I've nurtured a plan to write something similar, especially since my previous idea turned out to be unworkable. Here it is, to the tune of ABBA's Chiquitita.


Cthulhu, tell me what's wrong
You're enchained by the stars above you
In your eyes there is dreaming of tomorrow
How I hate to see you like this
There is no way you can deny it
I can see that you're oh so dead, so quiet

Cthulhu, show me the truth
I'm a shoulder you can cry on
Your best priest,
By you I was to R'lyeh drawn
You were always sure of yourself
Now I see you've broken a feather
I hope we can patch it up together

Cthulhu, you and I know
How the aeons come and they go
And the stars aligning

So the walls are tumbling down

Note that you have to sing Cthulhu using four syllables, but I don't view that as a trouble, given that Cthulhu's proper name is supposed to be unpronouncable anyway. Comments are of course welcome. I had completed this a while ago, but held off posting due to not being sure of some of the scansion, but I might as well open it up for critique and improvements.

This may be the first song I've seen that treats Cthulhu sympathetically, not counting ones that treat him worshipfully.

I don't know the original, so I can't help with the scansion, but I like it.

Well, it fell out naturally from the way the original song was written. That said, I'd be deeply worried about the sanity of the "I" of the song.

I think it scans just fine, and I think you can tweak the melody a bit if you prefer to sing Cthulhu as three syllables.

HP Lovecraft used two syllables, most people now (including me) use three, so it kinda amuses me to write a song where you have to use four.
