Isn't that characterisation a little unfair? They seem to be ahead of most nations in the world, although I noted the kicking and screaming.

Ahead of much of the world is not the same as "not backwards".

Cultural mores are relative. If you are ahead of most of the world, you are by definition not very backwards. I agree with you that GLBT-phobia is reprehensible and disgusting and should be stomped out as soon as possible and truly equal rights introduced, but being snarky towards the countries that actually _are_ making progress seems misplaced.
