What the heck is a peanut race?

Moving a peanut in an interesting way. It might be one meter on time, or simply the longest distance. It featured priminently in Swedish fandom at the Nasacons, and ended mainly because SAFA always won.

Jörgen Städje has a more detailed history of SAFA's Peanut Defense Initiative, also in Swedish but with pictures. PDI/1 was an electromagnetic cannon, PDI/2 was a computer controlled spoon accelerator with automatic peanut feed and several possible courses of movement.

SAFA culminated with PDI/3, or LIPAC 1600/27, Linear Peanut Accelerator (it was 1600 mm:s long and had 27 coils), built in a single night at Atlas Copco's research department.
