Wide. Shiny. Huge.
Jan. 20th, 2011 03:59 pmAs a present to myself after the Doors From Hell, I bought myself a new shiny for work: a Dell U2311H, which conveniently was for sale at a reputable Swedish supplier.
Got it this afternoon. It's HUGE. Not so much higher than my old one, but much wider. And I think my eyes will thank me soon too, given how much I watch it.
I also got a Sapphire Radeon HD 5450 for the computer, so I wouldn't have to connect the new Shiny! via VGA (I do most of my translation work on a basic Vostro 220s), and a DP cable for the Macbook so I can use the new Shiny! whenever I do heavy-duty work on the Macbook as well. Only snag was getting the standard brackets off the card and the low-profile brackets on it. Once, I was afraid I had broken the card getting the last screw off.

Date: 2011-01-20 06:00 pm (UTC)It's funny. I remember my first 12" monitor -- huge compared to the 9" the original Mac had. (Gee, that's like an iPad.) Then I got a 13" monitor, and after that 14" and then glorious 16"! But that was nothing compared to 17" and later 19". Then I got a 20" monitor and a couple of years ago a 22" monitor. At work I now have two 24" monitors and since last autumn I have a 27" iMac at home.
And every time I get a bigger one I can't imagine how I could live without it before.
I wonder where it will all end?

Date: 2011-01-20 06:14 pm (UTC)Right now, I don't imagine screens getting much bigger than 27 (with 16:9) or 30 (16:10) - the size of the desks and the capability of the eye puts a stop on further horizontal growth. I hope we get some vertical space back, however.
What I hope will happen, however, is a marked increase in resolution. We're still stuck at 100-130 dpi on most computer displays! This article gives some hope, however.
